“OH, THE PLACES WE’LL GO THEN,”
DURING THE YEAR TWENTY-TEN

FEBRUARY

‘All systems go. Commencing countdown to lift-off…’
Small Print, The Little Paper & Rooster Studio (AKA Tot Squad) Present the Second Annual
TOTSAPALOOZA: THE SPACE AGE RODEO EDITION
“DIY Defies Gravity”

Toronto Life Magazine awarded last winter’s wildly popular tribute to the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) spirit, Totsapalooza, with number 14 on their 2009 list of “50 Reasons To Love Toronto”. Fasten your seatbelts, celestial explorers! For this year’s Totsapalooza: The Space Age Rodeo Edition, we’ve put together another amazing lineup of leading indie rockers, children’s authors and inventive crafts to celebrate how the DIY ethos defies gravity. Don Kerr & The Jet Pack Orchestra will beam the party into another galaxy with the help of Bellwoods Trinity, I Eat Kids and Sho, Mo & The Monkey Bunch. Also on the bill is Katie Van Camp’s award-winning tale, Harry & Horsie, (Harper Collins), Ashley Spires’ stellar feline, Binky The Space Cat (Kids Can Press) and Chris A. Rutkowski’s eye-opening I Saw It Too: Real UFO Sightings (Dundurn). Catch future literary all stars in action at the Volume One Project Showcase. Enjoy organic space snacks from gourmet caterer Pantry. Dynamic brother-sister duo Ryan and Lisa Kelly from The Centre For Art & Soul will run activity and dance sessions. Kids will build musical instruments and UFOs that can actually fly out of recycled materials. And, of course, there will be an intergalactic jam session featuring budding rockers and indie veterans!

THE TOT STUDIO: FANTASTIC JOURNEYS DAY
A March Break Art Adventure With Laurel Croza, Matt James, & Patricia Storms
Is anywhere on earth more exotic than the places we imagine? To celebrate March Break, the 2-to-8 set can take a fantastic creative journey with some of our country’s leading children's artists. In I Know Here (Groundwood Books), Matt James' stunning visual art compliments Laurel Croza's poignant tale about a young girl whose family moves from the forests of northeastern Saskatchewan to a strange new place called ‘Toronto’. Crouza and James will guide the group in a dynamic craft and mapping activity. Noted illustrator and author Patricia Storms will perform a play with her husband based on her delightful new book, The Pirate And The Penguin (Owl Kids), featuring full body costumes and everything! Storms will then lead a group drawing exercise based on her characters' remarkable adventures

THE PIECE BY PIECE STORYTELLING MASH-UP
To celebrate the release of celebrated author and editor Teressa Toten's collection, Piece by Piece: Stories About Fitting Into Canada (Penguin Group Canada), we're staging a Storytelling Mash-Up. A writing contest for high school students will be organized ahead of time, asking them to contribute their own 500 word, 'Piece By Piece' stories. Rather than having each contest winner get up and read her/his entry, one after another, we're havin' a throwdown! Winners will be divided into groups. Each group will work with such award-winning contributors to the anthology as Linda Granfield, Mahtab Narsimhan, Richard Poplak and  Rui Umezawa. They will devise a way to combine their five winning stories into a single presentation. And then they will perform it! Also on the bill is a sound clash featuring teenage DJs from different communities across the city. Noted author Joseph Kertes will host the event.

Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen St West
Sun March 28; 2-4pm (Doors 1:30pm) FREE

There are lots of other literary confections currently percolating in the Small Print Easy Bake oven. Stay tuned…
